Dragon flies would dance upon the waters flowing by
And one could sit and contemplate the wherefore and the why.
The school bells rang; the children sang. I so longed to be free
I broke the rules; passed on school. A rebel lived in me
Not tied down, soon I found the music of my soul
That lifted me and carried me, this thing called rock and roll.
I don't know why; I never will, I had to learn to play.
I got an axe, a flattop box, a Harmony or Kay.
My fingers hurt, sometimes bled as music came to flow.
I had the itch; I'd found my niche. I had a boat to row
To see me through in what I do, to get me through the maze
Of restless nights and frequent fights and endless summer days.
I set my soul on the open road playing for my pay
Moving down to another town, sometimes twice a day
The songs were good, the voice okay and picking pretty fair
The band would play night and day and music filled the air.
I longed to go home each night and sleep in my own bed,
To look around and find a girl that maybe I could wed.
I settled down; I went to work; it didn't last too long.
Nine to five was not my thing; I never did belong.
Then divorce and, of course, she kept the kids and house.
I got my amp and this old Strat and memories of my spouse.
I hit the road one more time, my always endless friend.
It feIt so right to play each night and sing my songs again.
One more tune in one more town and then I’ve got to go
Play out loud for one more crowd and give them all a show
I know I'll die like old Hank out here on the road,
But I will live the life I love, the only life I know
